Laguna Beach - Monday

Sienna says: We made the biggest castle and swimming pool ever on the beach this morning. When we came back from dinner tonight, it had filled up with water from the ocean. I liked chasing the butterflies in the garden we visited. I get to watch High School Musical 2 on the Disney Channel tonight.

Derek says: Started the morning early with eight dolphins swimming past our window and we spent the first part of the day on the beach doing major construction works.

Mexican for lunch and then we headed off to San Juan Capistramo Mission which is famous for swallows which allegedly return on 19 March each year to nest. We saw some nests, no swallows, but the gardens were beautiful with amazing clumps of lavender and Monarch butterflies everywhere and large, fat carp swimming under mauve, white and pink water lillies.

Did you know that the Catholic Church supported the wrong side in the US - Mexican war? Big smacks! Luckily, Abraham Lincoln is a forgiving soul and let the Church have its land back. Too late for the local indigenes, of course, whose deliverance started in 1777.

We went back to Sapphire for dinner tonight and are now burping quietly in our corners back in the hotel room. Derek ate (1) Chicken Sikh kebob, lettuce wrap, green papaya-cucumber salad, mint raita, (2) Monk fish “clay pot”, baked polenta country eggplant-tomato stew, and (3) Warm soft-centered Valhrona chocolate cake, pistachio ice cream, rum-caramel sauce... mmmm.
