Sienna says: We're staying right on the beach and this morning we made a castle as big as a mountain. Then we had a beautful lunch at the Sapphire Restaurant. I had the cutest cheese burger (although they forgot the cheese). Then we went for a drive south to Dana Point. Later, I had chocolate mousse with chocolate ice cream and a shortbread biscuit shaped like the Eiffel Tower at the C'est la Vie Restaurant and Bakery. This reminded me of Janet's French lessons (the eating, that is!). [Cafe latte = Cafe au lait and they have no idea what a pain au chocalat is, or maybe it's our accents :-) ] I explored the playground at Laguna's Main Beach. I had slippery slide races with some other kids. Then we came home and went to bed. I'm missing you all my friends but we're coming home soon.

Derek says: This hotel is probably the worst we've stayed at, particularly for the price. Position is great, just a few steps to the sand with a 180 degree ocean view, but it's obviously a candidate for redevelopment. I sat in the lobby where the wireless network works and heard three customers complaining about the rooms, the best complaint being a light fitting that fell down in the middle of the night. We have an "air conditioned suite" where the temperatures reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit today. The air conditioner even tells us that as it groans. Electrical fittings are falling off, the fridge isn't cold, there isn't any TV reception, and there is a plunger next to the toilet. The smoke alarm is hanging from the ceiling -- surely a violation of Californian building codes or somesuch? The personnel are either sullen or high on something -- not the fresh air -- but luckily not both at once, at least not so far. Too scary! But the sliding doors open wide and the night breezes are cool.
All that said, we are very mellow and had a great day. The restaurant we went to for lunch was a find. The owner used to work at the Regent in Sydney and proposed to his wife with a Sapphire ring, hence the name. Food servings are less than mammoth sized and there is subtlety, interest and taste in the food. You can still choose which salad dressing and cheese type you want, but it's good cheese. Tomatoes could have had more flavour. Room temperature is down to 77 degrees so it's one more glass of Pinot Grigio for us before bed.
